451: Key Quotes pg 27-47
Task 1: Identify four of the following quotations. Explain the context of each line, then describe how each can be considered a significant moment in the novel. 3 marks for each quotation.
1. “I'm antisocial” (29)
2. “The firehouse trembled as a great flight of jet planes whistled a single note across the black morning sky” (33)
3. “any man's insane who thinks he can fool the government and us” (33)
4. “Was it always like this? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time...” (34)
5. “...we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out” (36)
6. “A book lit, almost obediently, like a white pigeon” (37)
7. “Montag had done nothing. His hand had done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own, with a conscience and a curiosity in each trembling finger had turned thief” (37)
8. “Montag felt himself back away and away out the door, after Beatty, down the steps, across the lawn, where the path of kerosene lay like the track of some evil snail” (39)
9. “His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms”(41)
10. “Well, wasn't there a wall between him and Mildred, when you came down to it?” (44)
11. “Run over by a car” (47)
Task 2:
“Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin” (34)
“Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin” (34)
Montag quotes this "historical fact". Research the actual history of Benjamin Franklin (yeah the guy with the key on the kite during the thunder storm). Summarize BF's impact on the Firefighting industry. How does this reflect on the laws Montag quotes on 34?

6. “A book lit, almost obediently, like a white pigeon” (37)
I think that this quotation talks about irony because white pigeons are symbols of purity and goodness and if you burn them, you are evil. It is like you are burning god’s messengers of peace.
7. “Montag had done nothing. His hand had done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own, with a conscience and a curiosity in each trembling finger had turned thief” (37)
In the context of this quotation, Montag’s hand steals a book from the lady’s attic. He stole the book because he was tempted by Clarisse and everything she did.
8. “Montag felt himself back away and away out the door, after Beatty, down the steps, across the lawn, where the path of kerosene lay like the track of some evil snail” (39)
This is a good quotation because it of the simile in it. The simile is “lay like the track of some evil snail”. This is an awesome quote because of the way it describes and puts the scene into perspective.
9. “His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms” (41)
This quote happens when Montag walks into his bedroom and he has the book in his hands. He feels that his hands are infected because they took the book and then are forcing him to read it.

Quotes By Natalie and Mary
1. “I’m antisocial.” (29)
Clarisse and Montag are having conversation about Clarisse’s school. Clarisse says people say that she is antisocial. Clarisse finds this strange because she is “very social indeed.” This is a significant moment because Clarisse is a thinker, and so people are brainwashed into thinking she is crazy. She is actually very social, except nobody talks anymore.
2 “Was it always like this? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time...” (34)
Montag and Beatty are playing cards with the other firemen. Montag questions their work. This is significant because Montag is starting to question what they are doing. Also, you know that he is sneaking peeks at books because he uses “Once upon a time.”
3 “Montag had done nothing. His hand had done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own, with a conscience and a curiosity in each trembling finger had turned thief” (37)
Montag just stole a book. He feels like it was all his hand, and HE had nothing to do with it. This is significant because Montag has taken a step towards thinking for himself, and he is probably going read this book, leading to stealing more books, which will probably lead to Montag questioning the government.
4. “Run over by a car” (47)
Mildred has just told Montag that Clarisse was hit by a car. This is significant because Clarisse is dead and she was Montag’s good friend. She was the one who taught him to think for himself and now she won’t be there for him anymore. Clarisse was one of the only people who could have helped change his city’s cruel laws.
Task 1 -
“The firehouse trembled as a great flight of jet planes whistled a single note across the black morning sky” (33)
In the novel, everyone is at the firehouse and they are oblivious that a war is starting. They ignore the radio like it is an everyday activity and continue playing poker. I think that this quote is significant because they don’t think to prepare for the consequences of the war. I also think that because in their society life has no value, they are not concerned about what may happen.
“Was it always like this? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time...” (34)
Montag is talking to Captain Beatty about their work and history. As he once read a line from a fairytale (once upon a time…) he said this by mistake. This is significant because this is proof that he read a book, which is not allowed in this society.
“...we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out” (36)
The woman whose books were about to be burned said this as the firemen entered and started maliciously destroying. This is significant because she acts like a martyr by sacrificing herself for what she believes in.
“Run over by a car” (47)
Mildred forgot that Clarisse had died and four days later she finally told Guy after he was searching for her. This shows that she only thinks about herself and is inconsiderate towards Montag when they are supposedly happily married.
“I’m antisocial” (29) This quote takes place when Clarisse is talking to Montag in the street. She is considered antisocial because she thinks for herself and doesn’t blindly believe what people tell her. This is a powerful moment in the text because it shows that people who think for themselves are considered insane and are required by the government to go to a psychiatrist
“Was it always? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time…” (34) At this point Montag is speaking to Beatty. They are standing in the firehouse playing cards. This is a powerful moment in the book because “Once upon a time” is the strating of every fairy tale. There is no way that Montag could know of this line if he hasn’t already read a book. He later says he read a book at the “Library Bust”. This is the first step for Montag to change who he is.
“…we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out” (36) This is a quote taken from the old woman when they break into her house on the terms of her having books that go against the government. This is a quote taken from Hugh Latimer before he was burned.
“any man’s insane who think he can fool the government and us.” (33) This is Beatty talking to Montag at the fire station. Montag asked him about the man that was taken to the asylum at the library bust. This is important because it shows that people how have books that go against the government or people that don’t do what everyone else does in this society are called insane and shunned.

5. “...we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out” (36)
This is what the lady in the house (that is to be burnt) says when Montag and the rest of the firemen come in to burn the books. This could be a significant moment in the book because the woman will be forever known because she died in what she believed in. Hugh Latimer was the man who said this quote to a man named Master Ridley before they both were burnt to death. Just like the woman Latimer died by strongly believing against the government.
10. “Well, wasn't there a wall between him and Mildred, when you came down to it?” (44)
This is what Montag thinks while in bed that night. He wonders if his relationship with Mildred is compatible. From his experience with the dandelion he wonders if he really loves Mildred. This could be significant in the novel because Montag is really starting to think (and go into the centre of the whirlpool) about his life. He wonders if the way he is living is right and if the government should control everything.
2. “The firehouse trembled as a great flight of jet planes whistled a single note across the black morning sky” (33)
This is when Montag and the other firemen are in the firehouse playing card games and listening to the radio. The jet planes are flying over the firehouse while the radio says that war could be declared any second and that the country should be ready to defend itself. This could be significant in the novel because it tells us that the entire country is that they don’t have a very safe place to live so they always need to be cautious of war.
4. “Was it always like this? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time...” (34)
This is when Montag is asking Beatty if firemen always started fires. This could be a significant moment because once Montag uses the line ‘once upon a time’ we can tell he has been reading books. Now all of the firemen are suspicious of him and are wondering what other information he knows.
They now believe that any man is insane who thinks they can fool them or the government. If they think that they are as high and mighty as the government then their egos have been blown up significantly.
The planes are so fast that they only make one noise. these planes are at war with someone, somewhere and they ( the firemen) don't care.
This is significant because they have been indocternated
Clarisse says she is antisocial because she doesn't go to school like everybody else and the rest of the world thinks shes antisocial and they don't like her so she doesn't go to school.
This is significant because she has different ideas of social behavior. her idea of sociality, is when people really talk.

Quotation:
1.) I’m anti-social.
This is significant because this is when Montag asks Clarisse why she isn’t in school and she says all the other students think she’s conspicuous and antisocial
2.) Was it always like this? The firehouse? Our work? I mean, well, once upon a time... This is after Montag leaves to arrive at his job at the firehouse and when Beatty doesn’t care whether the books are burned or the person’s will is to stay.
3.) Run over by a car. . . This is alter the book burning at Mrs. Blake’s house which went up in flames. Montag was asking and wondering about Clarisse and Mildred told Montag that she was dead and she was run over my a car
4.) Well, wasn’t there a wall between him and Mildred, when you can down to it? This is when Montag is furious for Mildred’s carelessness towards the woman’s burnings.

Quotations Response
“Was it always like this? The firehouse, our work? I mean, well, once upon a time...” (34)
This line occurs when Montag is asking Beatty if fireman work was always to start fires like this. This is significant because Montag says “once upon a time” and that is a line that you say in books so it shows that Montag has been reading. Montag has obviously changed. He took the step he needed to take to show that he was not meant to be a person that lives life blindly. He is now more like Clarisse.
“Run over by a car” (47)
This line occurs when Montag brings up the subject of Clarisse to his wife. It is important because it has been 4 days since she has been run over and Mildred is just telling him now. Clarisse has disappeared with her family. Clarisse is the one who was run over. This would be a very sad thing for Montag because Clarisse is the one who inspired his change.
“...we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out” (36)
This occurs when Beatty and the other firemen go into the house to burn the books and the lady is still there. She is the one who quotes this line. This is significant because this lady thinks that by killing herself she will state a point. She thinks that this is like being kidnapped for doing something that she believes in. She relates it to the witch trials in England.
“Well, wasn't there a wall between him and Mildred, when you came down to it?” (44)
This happens when Montag is thinking about Mildred and himself. He is now starting to think that him and Mildred are not a compatible partnership. He thinks that there is a wall between them now that he has started to read books. He probably does not want to be with Mildred anymore now that they are so different.

Benjamin Franklin started a union known of as the Union Fire Company that incorporated members into it to help fight fires that occurred. This club became larger and larger and spread throughout the U.S to become what now a days are Fire Fighters. This reflects on the laws on page 34 in Fahrenheit 451 because it states that Benjamin Franklin was the first fire fighter. This is ironic because what the quote says is the Benjamin Franklin was the first fire fighter to burn books, when really he was the first fire fighter to stop fires.
