Theme- Beatty believes that books are unsafe because they have been condensed and simplified to keep up with the public. As the novels have been shortened so many times to keep up with society, people have become ignorant and hurried up, rather than intelligent at a slow pace. When one person is exceptionally bright, it makes others jealous or hurt. So to prevent these emotions, Beatty and Montag’s society have gotten rid of books, so everyone is equal.

1. Beatty visits Mildred and Montag.
2. Mildred discovers the book under Montag's pillow.

3. "Shut the relatives up. This time, Mildred ran. The yammering voices stopped yelling in the parlor." (Pg. 53) This is significant because Montag has been asking Mildred to do this very thing all morning, but she wouldn't. Now when Captain Beatty asked her to she did it right away, because she is afraid of him.
4. "Let me fix your pillow.” (Pg. 56.) This is significant because if she moves the pillow the book will be uncovered and Montag will be in trouble with Beatty for sure.
5. “We must all be alike.” (Pg. 58) This is the reason that this world burns books. They want everybody to be alike so that people feel better about whom they are.
6. “Colored people don’t like ‘Black Sambo’ “(Pg. 59) this is significant because it shows why people hated books. It made them feel unequal and offended.
7. “If he hasn’t burned it by then, we do it for him.” (Pg 62) Montag has hinted towards having the book. Beatty says that many firemen get curious, and he lets them keep a book for 24 hours. This is significant because Montag knows that others have stolen books, which means somebody else must be thinking.

Theme.
Beatty said that they banned books so that everyone would be equal and happy. If you burn the books nobody is smarter that anyone else. If someone wasn’t happy because they offended in a book the government would just get rid of the book by burning it, gone forever. No more conflict. What the public doesn’t know can’t hurt them. I think that is the rule Beatty is living by.

LA ASSIGNMENT MAY22, TASK 1, Spencer Shupe, JACK Gilchrist, Hewitt Kingston...
1. The person who visits Montag and Mildred in this section is Captain Beatty. He is there to lecture Montag about society.
2. Mildred discovers that Guy has an illegal book under his pillow. She becomes totally shocked that Montag would do such a thing.
3. “And because they had mass, they became simpler” Here Beatty is talking about how everything has been shortened or cut down to make writing quicker, simpler and quick to read.
4. ““What’s this?” asked Mildred almost in delight” Here Mildred is discovering the book under Guy’s pillow. This is at the wrong time because if Beatty finds out that Montag has an illegal boooooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk under his pillow he is the authorities so Montag will be given a one-way ticket to jail.
5. “And wasn’t it this bright boy who you selected for beatings after class? Of course it was. We must all be alike.” Pg.58. This is in the part where Beatty is talking about everyone being the same. This is significant because society likes being the same and does not want anyone upset so they destroy everything the same by forcing them to be the same.
6. You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can`t have our minorities upset and stirred. This is important because he is talking about how people like Clarisse can`t speak out because people would become upset and start thinking about society.
7. Don`t let the torrent of melancholy and drear philosophy drown our world. This is significant because Beatty is again saying that society cannot be harmed by individual people’s issues.

Theme:
Beatty is summing up for Montag the last few centuries. He is saying that everything has because cut down, summarized to be made shorter for people to have more time. School has been made shorter and less educational and books illegal. He probably knows that Montag has a book, Beatty tells him that its ok, as long as its gone in 24 hours. As well as that he tells him how the government tries to make everyone the same and how odd balls like Clarisse happen sometimes.

Beatty visits Montag and Mildred in this section while Montag is sick.

Mildred is smoothing the bedclothes and comes across the book under his pillow.

pg.53-55 "Mildred smoothed the bedclothes. Montag felt his heart jump a beat."
This is when Beatty shows up at Montags house and is talking with him. Montag is scared because the hidden book he stole is under the pillow and she is trying to move it.

pg.56-57 "Mildreds hand froze behind the pillow."
This is when Mildred found the book behind the pillow. This could be significant because Mildred might show Beatty the book and Montag might be fired or have to go to a psychiatrist like Clarrise.

pg.58 "And wasn't it the bright boy you selected for beatings and tortures after hours?"
This is when Beatty is telling Montag why everyone had to be equal, no one could be smarter or dumber than everyone else. This is significant because this is why the government has taken conflict and problems out of everyones lives and solved them for them.

pg.59 "Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it."
This is when Beatty is telling Montag that the government is burning the books to make the people happy and again solving thier problems for them. This is significant because the government is almost forbidding the people to think for themselves.

pg.62 "Well then, what if a fireman accidentally, really not intending anything, takes a book home with him?"
This is when Montag is asking Beatty if it was okay if he actually did take a book. This is significant because if Beatty says it is okay he has nothing to worry about but if he doesn't there is a bigt problem waiting to happen.

1. Captain Beatty comes to visit Montag and Mildred
2. Mildred discovers the secret book that Montag has hidden under his pillow
3. “Shut the relatives up.”(53) This happens when Beatty comes to visit. This is significant because when Montag asked Mildred to turn off the parlor walls she did not. Then when Beatty to Mildred to turn the walls off she did. This shows that not only is she scared of him but he wants to talk to them about something serious.
4. “Mildred’s hand had frozen behind the pillow. Her fingers were tracing the book’s outline and as the shape became familiar, her face looked surprised and stunned.” (56) This happens when Beatty comes to Montag’s house and is explaining how books became shorter. Meanwhile, Mildred is trying to fix Montag’s pillow and Montag is trying to make sure she doesn’t find the book. This is significant because now Mildred knows Montag’s secret and knows that he has been dying to read a book.
5. “Not everyone born equal, as the constitution, says but everyone made equal.”(58) This happens when Beatty is explaining what happened to books. This is significant to the novel because this tells us why books are burned in the first place. They burn the books because they do not want to feel like others (books) are excluding the minority.
6. “You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can’t have our minorities upset and stirred.”(59) This happens when Beatty is explaining why firemen burn everything. This is significant because this is the reason that people are happy according to him. They burn books to eliminate people being offended or hurt by the content. They eliminate dead people fast so that there doesn’t have to be a sad funeral, for example.
7. “We let the firemen keep the book twenty-four hours. If he hasn’t burned it by then we simply burn it for them.” (62) This is what Beatty tells Montag when he is over at the house. This is significant because Montag did take a book and he now knows what will happen to him if he is found out.
8. Some of the reasons that books are banned are:
• They have information that the government doesn’t want people to know
• People would become smart and different than everyone if they read books
• The minorities will not feel bad
• This way no one gets hurt or offended because of the books’ content.
