"We'll burn them together..."
Page 66

This is Montag talking to Mildred about all the books in the house, and she wants to burn them. This is significant because Montag has been taking books all along. However, Mildred has the choice to turn her husband in and show her cruelness, or trust in what he is doing and prove that she truly does love him.

Response Pages 63-70
In this section, Montag shows us many things that we were unaware of before. He gets left after Beatty’s visit, feeling very anxious and annoyed at something. He decides to show Mildred something that he has been hiding for a long time. He goes into the back of a cupboard and pulls out twenty books. As soon as Mildred sees the books, she wants to burn them immediately. However, Montag stops her and they decide that it would be a good idea to support each other in changing the way that the society runs. Someone comes to the door but they don’t answer it because they are afraid that it is Beatty. They end up reading a book together.
My favorite quote from this section is “He kept moving his hand and dropping books, small ones, fairly large ones, yellow, red, green ones.”(65) This line occurs when Montag is revealing his secret stash of books to Mildred. This is significant because this is the start of Montag’s quest to change other people’s perspectives to what his now is. Once Mildred saw all of the books that were laying on the ground, she and Montag decided to go on this quest together. I think that they will succeed at this task and more people will believe that books are good and that what the society is making people believe is not good.

1. In this scene Montag reveals a stash of books he has been hiding to Mildred. Montag asks her if she will at least read them with him. She agrees and they start to read the beginning of the books.
2. “And yet I keep sitting here saying to myself, I'm not happy, I'm not happy.” (Page 65) This is Montag talking to Mildred after Beatty leaves. This is important because this and the context around it is a real turning point in Montag’s life. Furthermore, this is one of the points where Montag really realizes he isn’t happy with his life.

“Here now,” said Montag “we’ll start over again, at the beginning” (Pg. 68).

I chose this quotation because Montag is explaining to Mildred about the book that he is reading. Nevertheless, Mildred keeps trying to explain what Captain Beatty was just saying, “the books mean nothing”. Montag and Mildred might actually drift closer together rather than drifting apart. However, if Beatty finds out that Montag has 20 odd books, he will surely be extremely angry. By starting at the beginning again, Mildred might get to understand her husband more than ever. And in return, she might let Montag into her heart rather than blocking him out.

Summarization of pages 63-70

In this section of Fahrenheit 451 Montag shows Mildred all the books he has been hiding up in the vents. Mildred knows that she has to burn the books to save her home and parlour walls but if she decides to go along with Montags plan, it will show that Mildred trusts and truly loves him. Then as they are talking, Beatty knocks on the door and they both panic they know if Beatty finds out about all the books that they were hiding, their home would be destroyed and they would be sent to jail. Finally, Beatty leaves and Montag reads out a section of a book.

Significant Quotation

“Here now” said Montag. “We’ll start over again at the beginning” (pg 68)
This quotation is significant because this is when Montag has just read aloud a part of a book (which is against the law) and has decided he must do something about it. HE wants to start fresh. The context of this quotation is when Montag reads aloud a part of a book to Mildred.

Pages 63-70 Task 3

In this section, Montag shows Mildred a stash of books he has hidden away. She becomes frightened, and tries to throw one in the incinerator. She says that even though Montag is not happy, she is, and she is proud to be. Montag asks her for her help, and for her to love him enough tp help him through this. She unwillingly agrees, and just as they sit down, someone knocks on the door. They do not answer it because they are afraid it is captain Beatty.

“I need you so much right now, I can’t tell you. If you love me at all you’ll put up with this.” Page 66.
Montag is talking to Mildred about the hidden books. This is significant to the book because Montag is asking Mildred to help him out. Mildred needs to step away from the TV long enough to see the damage that has been done to her world, and long enough to help her husband out. She knows that Montag has challenged her. If she doesn’t help him, he will know that she doesn’t really love him, she just loves the TV walls he buys her. I think that if she helps him, they will become closer together.

Task 2:
Picture 2:
We get about 10 calls per night.”
I think that this quote is significant to the novel because this is when Mildred is getting her fluids taken out of her body after the overdose. This shows that people in this time will do anything to please them and make them feel needed. Also this shows how many people do this per day and that the government supports this because they have invented a machine to take the medication out of their anatomies. If the government wanted people to stop overdosing, then they would not have created a machine for now people have a need to do such a thing.
Picture 3:
“My uncle was once arrested for going 40k on the highway.”
I think that this quote is significant to the novel because this shows how people do not care about slowing down and looking at nature and seeing how everyone else is. Instead, they only think for themselves just like when Clarisse says that 10 of her friends have been killed during the school year. The book it tells us about how bombers (the black jet) fly across the city at night as though a war has just begun.
